Undivided
We are one people, undivided
Sisters, Brothers, all invited
To fashion from these hellish days
A Haven for tomorrow
To teach our children how to live
As though this world is all we have
Because
It
Is.
To take a stand against the lies
That we were taught
And sometimes tried
To forget
Unsuccessfully
The lie that said there’s
Them
And Us
The myths that once United us
In hatred of our scapegoats
And silenced the victims’ voice.
Let’s teach that violence cannot work
That darkness doesn’t drive out dark
And show that only
Love
can
Win.
Let’s bury prejudice and hate
With patient voices educate
The stragglers who still think
That it’s okay
To cherish lies from yesterday
And define themselves
By anything as unimportant as
Country,
Colour,
Creed
And ignore the truth that is obvious
To those with ears to hear:
A house at war against itself
Cannot stand. And so
We stand.
We are one people
Reunited
Brothers, Sisters
All decided
To be one people,
Undivided.
Inspired by the Avaaz Project against Extremism.
I wrote this for the EU Referendum, hoping that people wouldn’t divide us with their votes.
